Three Pagodas at Dali

October 29th, 2009 by admin

Today saw us take a drive our to Dali, our next overnight stop. Here we visited the Three Pagodas, which turned out to be so much more than just the Pagodas. The Pagodas are and amazing sight as you pull up to them and a testiment to solid building surviving over 1000 years aswell as earthquakes with crumbled surrounding buildings.

Behind the Pagodas are temple after temple, each one bigger and more grand than the next with the final one containing a huge gold Buddha and other statues which dwarf everything around. Our guide was very keen to make sure on each temple we entered through one of the side doors as using the middle one would have made us a monk apparently (although I’m sure there are other qulifications required)!

For dinner we took a wander into Dali old town which was not as quaint or picturesque as Lijiang, but still very nice and we had a good meal with our guide who actually ate with us which was nice.
